Road Trip to the Oregon Country Fair

Camping in the Delica

Here’s something from the sorta travel related department– I did a road trip in the new (to us) Delica down to the Oregon Country Fair, near Eugene (unfortunately Faye had to stay home and work). It was a test of the vehicle (ran fine) and the camper modification I did to it (needs some fine tuning).

And, of course, it was a chance to immerse myself in three days of altered reality, the kind that reconnects me with various parts of my past. For those not familiar with the Oregon Country Fair, its roots go back to the counter-culture 60s. For more than 40 years the Fair has been a place where people can let their hair down, so to speak. Costumes are encouraged, clothing is pretty much optional.

The Mud People

It is hippie heaven, but remarkably well organized, which is an oxymoron. But it works. Forested paths, lined with hundreds of food and craft vendors, connect meadows and more than a dozen stages and venues where there is a constant stream of music and performers.

There were an estimated 45,000 people at the fair. Saturday, the peak day, felt a bit congested at times. But it was the sort of crowd that was even more fun up close and personal.

Speaking of the counter-culture 60s, the second incarnation of Ken Kesey’s famous bus “Further” was on display just outside the fair. (Kesey’s son, Zane, was there and said the original bus, which has been deteriorating in a swamp on Kesey’s farm in Oregon since the late 80s, is being restored.)

Say it with red.

Even though Kesey bought the second bus in 1990, it was given a psychedelic paint job by Kesey and some of the original Merry Pranksters, and is about as iconic of the 60s as anything.

That psychedelic bus felt like a link back to a time when we thought we could change the world, back when peace, love and understanding didn’t seem ridiculously naive. I guess at the Fair, for a few days, it all seemed possible once again.

The Joker makes a point.

There is greeting common at the Fair, and other similar gatherings: Welcome home. That’s what it felt like.

The First Coming

www.jimmccluskey.com Posted on February 19, 2009 by JimMarch 15, 2012

I had every intention of following up my last post, a parting shot at the outgoing administration (I’m averse to even naming it now), with a forward-looking piece on the implications of the new Obama administration. But a warm glow settled over me and I dozed off. My blissful state was slightly disturbed by Obama’s recent unsuccessful attempts to tango with Congressional Republicans over the Stimulus Bill. That will teach him to dance with the one who brung him. The Bill passed anyway, so who needs ‘em? Maybe next time Congress can get things done with less drama. The Republicans … Continue reading →

Left, Right, Left…

www.jimmccluskey.com Posted on November 14, 2008 by JimMarch 15, 2012

Lest you think that every blog post for the next couple of months is going to be about Obama, here is something completely different: Over the past year severed feet have been washing up on the southern coast of British Columbia left and right (mostly right). The seventh, a left, encased in a running shoe as were the previous six, just turned up. (One foot washed ashore on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington, so this is not just a Canadian phenomenon, though the nationality most of the feet have yet to be determined.) So far only one foot has been … Continue reading →

Obama Envy

www.jimmccluskey.com Posted on November 3, 2008 by JimMarch 15, 2012

It seems safe to say that the next president of the U.S. will be Barak Obama. If the polls are right his lead over McCain is too great to be stolen. I think there is a pretty good chance that the past two elections were stolen, but that was only possible because the votes for each candidate were so close. Obama had to get an insurmountable lead, and it looks like he has done it. But the past has shown that anything can happen; I’m not going to open the champagne yet, but it is chilling. Yesterday I saw a … Continue reading →

Poker Politics

www.jimmccluskey.com Posted on December 14, 2006 by JimMarch 15, 2012

I’ve been playing a little poker lately. The more I play, the more I am seeing other things in terms of poker, or at least in terms of winning strategies. Poker is not a perfect analogy for the “war we now find ourselves in”, as President Bush recently put it, but I think there are some parallels. The most fundamental poker strategy is “know when to hold ’em, know when to fold ’em.” Sometimes the right thing to do is to fold, cut your losses and wait until you have a stronger hand. Bad poker players hang on to bad … Continue reading →
