Asses and Elbows

www.jimmccluskey.com Posted on January 19, 2009 by JimMarch 15, 2012

Today is Bush’s last day in office. Those words bring me more happiness than I can express. I’d like to breathe a sigh of relief and say “We survived,” but a lot of people—Americans, Iraqis and many others—didn’t, thanks to Bush’s policies and actions. Yes, almost 3000 people were killed by al Qaeda in New York on 9/11™. It was an attempt to terrorize the US, which, I’m sure, has succeeded far beyond Osama bin Laden’s wildest hopes. Terrorism is the tool of the weak; it relies on the reaction of the victim to do most of the work. The … Continue reading →

Left, Right, Left…

www.jimmccluskey.com Posted on November 14, 2008 by JimMarch 15, 2012

Lest you think that every blog post for the next couple of months is going to be about Obama, here is something completely different: Over the past year severed feet have been washing up on the southern coast of British Columbia left and right (mostly right). The seventh, a left, encased in a running shoe as were the previous six, just turned up. (One foot washed ashore on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington, so this is not just a Canadian phenomenon, though the nationality most of the feet have yet to be determined.) So far only one foot has been … Continue reading →

Obama Envy

www.jimmccluskey.com Posted on November 3, 2008 by JimMarch 15, 2012

It seems safe to say that the next president of the U.S. will be Barak Obama. If the polls are right his lead over McCain is too great to be stolen. I think there is a pretty good chance that the past two elections were stolen, but that was only possible because the votes for each candidate were so close. Obama had to get an insurmountable lead, and it looks like he has done it. But the past has shown that anything can happen; I’m not going to open the champagne yet, but it is chilling. Yesterday I saw a … Continue reading →

Beyond Statistics

www.jimmccluskey.com Posted on January 18, 2008 by JimMarch 15, 2012

Joseph Stalin said that a single death is a tragedy, a million is a statistic. When people talk about Guatemala’s “civil war” it is usually in statistics—30 years of fighting, some 200,000 killed or missing. (I put “civil war” in quotes because it is a misnomer; it implies two opposing sides more or less equally matched. The guerilla forces never numbered more than 5000 even at the height of the fighting in the early 80s, and that number was divided among four mostly unrelated groups. The government reaction was not so much a fight as genocide.) One of the areas … Continue reading →

Guatemala Gazette

a travel journal...
I started traveling to Guatemala in the mid-80s. When the internet became commonly available there a dozen years later I began writing a travel journal and emailing it to friends and family. This is the archive of those journals. GO>>>
